The Car Buyer’s Bill of Rights protects consumers when they buy new or used vehicles. Understanding this federal regulation can help car buyers purchase quality vehicles without delay and hassle.

A Closer Look at the Car Buyer’s Bill of Rights
The law was created with car shoppers in mind and enables consumers to make purchases without having to worry about whether they are being treated fairly by dealers.

Under this regulation, car buyers are protected in these three areas:

1. Before purchasing a vehicle.  Consumers may test-drive a vehicle before making their purchase decision, and if they encounter problems after leaving a dealership they can return a car immediately.

Depending on the state, car buyers also have the right to return a car at least two days after they purchase it. Many states also have extended deadlines, and the local branch of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) can provide more information about a state’s mandatory return policy.

Purchasing an extended return policy from a dealer can also be a good idea. Car buyers would not get back the money that was spend on the return policy if a problem arose, but could get the entire purchase price for their vehicle back. Typically, dealers require that all returned cars have less than 250 miles driven since they were purchased, and these vehicles must be in the same condition as when they were sold.

2. Trade-ins. Car dealers must keep a trade-in car off the market for those who purchased a pre-owned car and an extended return policy. These sellers cannot list the trade-in car until this policy expires.

3. Honest advertising. The Car Buyer’s Bill of Rights stipulates that dealers must inform customers about new and used vehicles. If a car is used, it must be labeled as such and cannot be passed off as new.

In addition, the law protects car shoppers against price mark-ups. Dealers must display the price of a vehicle without add-ons or other options and provide exact costs of any extra features.

If a dealer fails to comply with the Car Buyer’s Bill of Rights, consumers should notify a local DMV branch.
