A Dog’s Life at The Velvet Snout

The buzz of trimming clippers, the unclicking of leashes, and excited dogs put in to play groups are regular occurrences for The Velvet Snout. From the Rowdy Room to the Romper Room to the Little Rascals and Rover Room there is a happy place for your dog. Owner Laura Couch read about a doggie daycare and ended up dropping her German Shepherd, Asher, off for a playdate over 11 years ago. Within 9 months of Asher’s first playdate, the Velvet Snout was up and running. April 2014 marked The Velvet Snout’s 11th birthday.

Couch has three locations so a typical day varies for her. Her passion for animals is what keeps her going. “Knowing this is a happy place for dogs is a great thing,” Couch said. “Not that going to the vet is bad, but dogs generally don’t like it. Here they get to socialize and go home tired.” Couch said.

Couch’s best advice for small business owners is to do a lot of research upfront and along the way. “Be prepared for the money to not come flying in when you first open. And have a Plan B for everything, even if you don’t think you need a Plan B,” Couch said. Couch is a Colonial commercial customer.

The toughest obstacle Couch faces as a small business owner is the employee hiring process. “I am lucky to have some dedicated long-term employees, but people don’t realize how physical the job is and how much work there is to be done in a day,” Couch said. It is a team environment at The Velvet Snout and communication is key as it should be with all small businesses.

“It’s not just about playing with dogs; the health of the animal is paramount, and of course a happy customer. You are taking care of someone’s child.” Couch said.

Couch also advises an open door policy. Give employees the option to voice ideas and concerns. Promote from within and make sure employees are rewarded for good behavior.
